Alternative Health and Fitness

Healthcare costs in the United States has skyrocketed over the past few decades. The high cost of health insurance alone exceed what most people even capable of. When combined with the cost of things that are not covered by insurance, the result is often bankruptcy. In addition, many people who are most in need of health is often considered uninsurable. Therefore, they rarely get the care they need.

The current economic state of health in America has proven to be a catalyst for the booming alternative health and fitness industry. The growth of this industry over the last decade or two has been staggering. Recent research shows that in 2010, almost 65% of Americans will use some form of alternative approaches to health.

Alternative health and fitness regimens are often designed to use the body’s natural chemistry and defense as a means to achieve good health. Acupuncture for example, has many physical benefits that have been understood by the Chinese for centuries. In Chinese medicine, acupuncture is used to regulate the flow of qi (pronounced “chee”) which when blocked is a cause of poor health.

Over the last few decades western medicine has become much more accepting of acupuncture as a legitimate medical technique, although for more “scientific” reasons. Medical research has shown that this procedure uses the body’s nervous system to alter brain chemistry by releasing neurotransmitters and other biochemical, often lead to increased immune function, blood circulation, and many other benefits as well.

Acupuncture, like many other alternative health and wellness programs, can have very real, positive effect on the human body. However, care should be taken before starting an alternative health regimen. Many of the health system is scientifically proven and can often do more harm than good.

Unfortunately, many (certainly not all) proponents of alternative medicine is the classic snake-oil salesman. Although there are enough conventional healing methods that have been scientifically proven benefits of a legitimate, there are also many scams on the market. Before starting a new health regimen, make sure you do your research.
